As your character goes on adventures and overcomes challenges, he or she gains experience, represented by milestones. After a number of milestones, a character advances in capability; This advancement is called gaining a level.
___ ### Milestones A milestone is is a measurement of your characters journey through their story. During your campaign, the story of your character as well as the other players character will have many chapters, which may be broken up and accomplished however you'd like. Each time that you accomplish one of these chapters, you have completed a Milestone. Depending on how many Milestones you have accomplished, you gain certain benefits, such as stat increases or gaining levels.

### Gaining a Level When you accomplish a milestone, you may be eligible to gain a level. The number of milestones you need in order to level up are as follows: - One milestone per level in order to reach Levels 2 and 3. - Two milestones per level in order to reach Levels 4 through 18. - Three milestones per level in order to reach Levels 19 and 20. When your character gains a level, his or her class often grants additional features, as detailed in the class description. In addition, every character’s proficiency bonus increases at certain levels. Each time you gain a level, you gain 1 additional Hit Die. Roll that Hit Die, add your Constitution modifier to the roll, and add the total (minimum of 1) to your hit point maximum. Alternatively, you can use the fixed value shown in your class entry, which is the average result of the die roll (rounded up). When your Constitution modifier increases by 1, your hit point maximum increases by 1 for each level you have attained. For example, if your 7th-level Fighter has a Constitution score of 17, when he reaches 8th level, he increases his Constitution score from 17 to 18, thus increasing his Constitution modifier from +3 to +4. His hit point maximum then increases by 8.

### Ability Score Increase When you reach Level 3, levelling up requires two milestones to reach the next level. From this point, each time that you gain a milestone that doesn't result in your character levelling up, you instead earn a small Ability Score Increase, or ASI. When you earn this, you gain 1 Ability Point that you can put towards any ability score of your choosing. Unless you have a trait, feature, ability or item that says otherwise, you can’t increase an ability score above 22.
___ ### Proficiency Bonus Your proficiency bonus is always based on your total character level, as shown in the Proficiency Bonus table, not your level in a particular class. For example, if you are a Fighter 3/Rogue 2, you have the proficiency bonus of a 5th level character, which is +3. If you have proficiency with a skill, saving throw or hobby kit, add your proficiency bonus to the roll when you make a check with that skill or kit. | Character Level | Proficiency Bonus | | :-------------: | :---------------: | | 1 | +2 | | 2 | +2 | | 3 | +2 | | 4 | +2 | | 5 | +3 | | 6 | +3 | | 7 | +3 | | 8 | +3 | | 9 | +4 | | 10 | +4 | | 11 | +4 | | 12 | +4 | | 13 | +5 | | 14 | +5 | | 15 | +5 | | 16 | +5 | | 17 | +6 | | 18 | +6 | | 19 | +6 | | 20 | +6 |

##### Expertise Normally, if a character is proficient in a given skill, they simply add their proficiency bonus in addition to the ability score modifier at hand when making a given skill check. However, if a character gains Expertise in a skill, that character instead adds double their proficiency bonus any time they'd make a skill check of the corresponding type. Expertise can allow even low level characters to potentially roll incredibly high on a given skill check, while higher-level characters with expertise can feasibly exceed a total of 30 with some reliability.
