Heroic though they might be, adventurers can't spend every hour of the day in the thick of exploration, social interaction, and combat. They need rest — time to sleep and eat, tend their wounds, refresh their minds and spirits for spellcasting, and brace themselves for further adventure.

### Air
Most creatures require air to breathe, unless they have a feature that specifies otherwise. Most constructs and undead don't need to breathe, and some creatures are capable of breathing underwater. Nevertheless, if a creature needs to breathe, it should take every precaution to ensure it can continue doing so.
##### Suffocating
A creature can hold its breath for a number of minutes equal to 1 + its Constitution modifier (minimum of 30 seconds). A creature only gains this benefit if it was prepared to hold it's breath, like going for a swim. If a creature is suddenly unable to breathe, like by means of the suffocate spell, it does not get the benefit of holding it's breath.
When a creature runs out of breath or is choking, it gains 1 level of exhaustion at the start of each of its turns. When a creature can breathe again, it removes 1 level of exhaustion per turn until all levels of exhaustion it gained from suffocating are gone (however any levels of exhaustion gained by other means, including exhaustion potentially gained by dying from suffocating, are kept.)
If a creature begins dying due to suffocation, they automatically fail any Death Throes until they are able to breathe again.

### Food
A creature needs an amount of food per day based on its size, as shown in the table below. A creature that eats but consumes less than the required food for a day must succeed on a DC 10 Constitution saving throw or gain 1 level of exhaustion level at the day’s end. A creature that eats nothing for 3 days automatically gains 1 level of exhaustion at the end of the third day as well as an additional level at the end of each subsequent day without food.
A normal day of eating resets the count of days without food to zero, however any exhaustion accrued must be removed through normal means.
| Creature Size | Daily Food Intake Required |
| :------------: | :------------------------: |
| Tiny | 1/4 lb. |
| Small & Medium | 1 lb. |
| Large | 4 lbs. |
| Huge | 16 lbs. |
| Gargantuan | 64 lbs. |

### Water
A creature requires an amount of water per day based on its size, as shown in the table below. A creature that drinks less than the required water for a day gains 1 level of exhaustion at the day’s end. Exhaustion caused by dehydration can’t be removed until the creature drinks the full amount of water required for a day, however any exhaustion accrued must be removed through normal means.
Creatures that are in dry environments are required to drink twice as much water in a day or become exposed. This has no bearing on the amount of water required to prevent exhaustion however; a creature need only ever drink their daily required amount, as shown below, to prevent exhaustion.
| Creature Size | Daily Water Intake Required |
| :------------: | :-------------------------: |
| Tiny | 1/4 gallon |
| Small & Medium | 1 gallon |
| Large | 4 gallons |
| Huge | 16 gallons |
| Gargantuan | 64 gallons |

### Rest
Adventurers, as well as other creatures, can take breaks in the midst of a day and rests to end it.
A rest is a period of downtime, lasting between 1 to 8 hours long, during which a character does nothing more strenuous than eating, crafting, drinking, keeping watch, reading, or tending to wounds. During this time, a character receives several benefits.
>**Hit Dice & Healing**
>During a rest, a character can spend one or more hit dice, up to the character’s maximum number of Hit Dice, which is equal to the character’s level. For each Hit Die spent in this way, the player rolls the die and adds the character’s Constitution modifier to it. The character regains hit points equal to the total (minimum of 0). The player can decide to spend an additional Hit Die after each roll.
>
>**Exhaustion**
>If a character has any levels of exhaustion, some of it may be restored depending on the duration of the rest. If a character has 1 or 2 levels of exhaustion and they take a rest that is **less than** 4 hours in duration, they may reduce their exhaustion level by 1, as long as there is nothing preventing it from being removed. If a character has 1 or 2 levels of exhaustion and they take a rest that is **longer than** 4 hours in duration, they may remove both levels of exhaustion, as long as there is nothing preventing it from being removed.
During a rest, a character may perform a Downtime Activity that they have time for.
Taking a Rest progresses the time of day to the next day segment. For example, if it was morning and the party decides to take a short rest, when the rest finishes, it will now be afternoon.

##### Long Rest
A long rest is a period of extended downtime, usually 8 hours long, during which a character sleeps. Once a character has finished sleeping, they receive several benefits. A character can't receive these benefits more than once in a 24-hour period unless they have 3 or more levels of exhaustion; if this is the case, then a creature may take as many long rests as they like until their exhaustion level is at 2 or less.
>**Hit Dice & Healing**
>At the end of their long rest, a character regains all lost hit points. The character also regains up to half of their total hit dice if any had been spent.
>
>**Exhaustion**
>If a character has 3 or more level of exhaustion, their total exhaustion level is reduced by 1.
Going without a long rest does have its consequences. Whenever you end a 24-hour period without taking a long rest, you must succeed on a DC 10 Constitution Check or suffer one level of exhaustion.
It becomes harder to fight off exhaustion if you stay awake for multiple days. After the first 24 hours, the DC increases by 5 for each consecutive 8-hour period without a long rest. The DC resets to 10 when once you've slept for the full duration.
If you require 8 hours for a long rest and your rest is interrupted at any point, you do not gain any of the benefits associated with finishing a long rest, however you do gain the benefits of a Rest as long as you were able to sleep for at least an hour. If your long rest is interrupted, you are now awake and cannot take a long rest again during that day segment. If you require less than 8 hours for a long rest, you may still gain the benefits of a long rest, depending on the length of the interruption.
