Heroic though they might be, adventurers can't spend every hour of the day in the thick of exploration, social interaction, and combat. They need rest — time to sleep and eat, tend their wounds, refresh their minds and spirits for spellcasting, and brace themselves for further adventure.

### Air
Most creatures require air to breathe, unless they have a feature that specifies otherwise. Most constructs and undead don't need to breathe, and some creatures are capable of breathing underwater. Nevertheless, if a creature needs to breathe, it should take every precaution to ensure it can continue doing so.
##### Suffocating
A creature can hold its breath for a number of minutes equal to 1 + its Constitution modifier (minimum of 30 seconds). A creature only gains this benefit if it was prepared to hold it's breath, like going for a swim. If a creature is suddenly unable to breathe, like by means of the suffocate spell, it does not get the benefit of holding it's breath.
When a creature runs out of breath or is choking, it gains 1 level of exhaustion at the start of each of its turns. When a creature can breathe again, it removes 1 level of exhaustion per turn until all levels of exhaustion it gained from suffocating are gone.

### Food
A creature needs an amount of food per day based on its size, as shown in the table below. A creature that eats but consumes less than the required food for a day must succeed on a DC 10 Constitution saving throw or gain 1 level of exhaustion level at the day’s end. A creature that eats nothing for 3 days automatically gains 1 level of exhaustion at the end of the third day as well as an additional level at the end of each subsequent day without food.
A normal day of eating resets the count of days without food to zero, however any exhaustion accrued must be removed through normal means.
| Creature Size | Daily Food Intake Required |
| :------------: | :------------------------: |
| Tiny | 1/4 lb. |
| Small & Medium | 1 lb. |
| Large | 4 lbs. |
| Huge | 16 lbs. |
| Gargantuan | 64 lbs. |

### Water
A creature requires an amount of water per day based on its size, as shown in the table below. A creature that drinks less than the required water for a day gains 1 level of exhaustion at the day’s end. Exhaustion caused by dehydration can’t be removed until the creature drinks the full amount of water required for a day, however any exhaustion accrued must be removed through normal means.
Creatures that are in dry environments are required to drink twice as much water in a day or become exposed. This has no bearing on the amount of water required to prevent exhaustion however; a creature need only ever drink their daily required amount, as shown below, to prevent exhaustion.
| Creature Size | Daily Water Intake Required |
| :------------: | :-------------------------: |
| Tiny | 1/4 gallon |
| Small & Medium | 1 gallon |
| Large | 4 gallons |
| Huge | 16 gallons |
| Gargantuan | 64 gallons |

### Rest
Adventurers, as well as other creatures, can take breaks in the midst of a day and rests to end it.
##### Short Rest
A short rest is a period of downtime, only 1 or 2 hours long, during which a character does nothing more strenuous than eating, crafting, drinking, keeping watch, reading, or tending to wounds.
During this time, a character can spend one or more hit dice, up to the character’s maximum number of Hit Dice, which is equal to the character’s level. For each Hit Die spent in this way, the player rolls the die and adds the character’s Constitution modifier to it. The character regains hit points equal to the total (minimum of 0). The player can decide to spend an additional Hit Die after each roll.
If a character has 1 or 2 levels of exhaustion, taking a short rest reduces their exhaustion level by 1, as long as there is nothing preventing them from doing so.
Taking a short rest progresses the time of day to the next day segment. For example, if it was morning and the party decides to take a short rest, when the rest finishes, it will now be afternoon.

##### Long Rest
A long rest is a period of extended downtime, 8 hours long, during which a character does nothing more strenuous than eating, crafting, drinking, keeping watch, reading, sleeping or tending to wounds.
Similar to a short rest, a character can spend one or more hit dice, up to the character’s maximum number of Hit Dice, which is equal to the character’s level. For each Hit Die spent in this way, the player rolls the die and adds the character’s Constitution modifier to it. The character regains hit points equal to the total (minimum of 0). The player can decide to spend an additional Hit Die after each roll. It should be noted that spending hit dice in this way during a Long Rest happens **after** the long rest is taken therefore any hit die spent are not immediately restored.
However, if a character chooses to use at least 6 hours of their long rest to sleep, they gain additional benefits. At the end of their sleep, a character regains all lost hit points. The character also regains up to half of their total hit dice if any had been spent. If the character has 1 or 2 levels of exhaustion, sleeping removes the exhaustion completely. If the character has 3 or more levels of exhaustion, sleeping removes 1 level.
While multiple long rests can be taken in a day, a character can't benefit more from sleeping more than once in a 24-hour period.
Taking a long rest fills an entire day segment, effectively skipping that time of day. For example, if it was afternoon and the party decides to take a long rest, that rest will take place during the night, and when it finishes, it will be morning.

##### Sleep
A long rest is never mandatory, but going without sleep does have its consequences. Whenever you end a 24-hour period without at least 6 hours of sleep, you must succeed on a DC 10 Constitution Check or suffer one level of exhaustion.
It becomes harder to fight off exhaustion if you stay awake for multiple days. After the first 24 hours, the DC increases by 5 for each consecutive 8-hour period without 6 continuous hours of sleep. The DC resets to 10 when once you've slept.
